Ruth Wolf-Rehfeldt began preparing his typewriter graphics in the early 1970s, which he dubbed Typewriting. Despite his confinement to the GDR, he managed to join the international artistic scene with the help of his Mail Art. Creating works on his typewriter allowed him to work conceptually, and distance himself from the doctrines of the art of socialist realism. Thanks to his heavily structured nature of writing, he evaded the control of censorship, since the purchasers and owners of typewriters in the GDR were all registered and thus all typewriter-based texts could be identified.
